Arsenal 2013.
Watching the London derby yesterday was sooo gratifying. Arsenal has been getting so much slack lately for not buying any new players/stars but people forget that the players already in the club are pretty good.
I think the main beef people have with the current squad is the perceived lack of depth. Our first XI is pretty solid. Szczesny is pretty consistent, Mertesacker and Koscielny is a good partnership (poor Vermaelen), while Gibbs and Jenkinson are young and continually improving, while Sagna and Monreal are pretty good and reliable.
We are actually spoiled for choice in the attacking. People typically cite the lack of a proper DMF but I dunno.. We are getting quite solid lately. We've got Arteta, Rosicky, Ramsey, Wilshere and Cazorla plus the returning Flamini all vying for places in the central midfield. On the wings, Oxley-Chamberlain, Walcott and Podolski.. Some of the CMs and FBs can play on the wings too..
But upfront is Giroud alone. Yes, Podolski and Walcott can play there too and we do have youngsters like Gnabry..
And that is the point. We have a good first XI, there are competition for places and supplemented by some promising youths. With Flamini returning after his 5 years "loan", I am personally satisfied with the squad.
Think about. Buy a big name player, someone I mentioned above will have to give way. Or the new player will need time to bed in, like Giroud and Podolski last season. That being said, I was pleased with Flamini yesterday. He was visibly commanding and leading his team especially when defending. In some ways he is the veteran in the team. It's good to see someone taking leadership, pointing and shouting, something not often seen with the Arsenal team lately.
Well, if Wenger do buy a few more players, either they are squad players or big name stars, of course I will be happy but whatever happens I'll be cheering the Gunners all the way. Always (Y).
