Fort Canning outing
Yesterday I visited Fort Canning Park with Shafiq and Danial. It was primarily a photography outing; besides just taking photos, I wanted to play around with speedlights and.my new reflector as well as to see if the park is a viable option for a photo shoot.
I've been wanting to go to various parks and locations of Singapore just to take photographs. I decided on Fort Canning when I rode past it a few days back.
When we arrived there, we decided that Dan's D7000 will use his 18-105 lens while I will use my 75-300. So I had a few chances to use his Nikon. Needless to say, I was awkward. But it was fun. Perhaps I should start using other people's Nikons just so I would be familiar with both systems.
To be honest, I wasn't satisfied with the shoot. Perhaps it's because we were aimless. No clear objectives and neither Danial nor I really took the lead. I merely lead the way but not with the photography.
On that point, it was a recce after all. The idea was to check out the park, which we did. Both Dan and I have been to Fort Canning before, but not for photography.
Perhaps I felt limited by my glass. 75-300 don't really allow me to take nice scenic pictures. But it was a challenge I undertook for myself after all.
So I took mostly portraits. Don't get me wrong, there are advantages to using a telephoto to a standard zoom like Dan's. Perhaps I should have been more critical with my composition. On hindsight, most of my photos were 'snapshots' while I was too focus on getting my off-camera flash to trigger than my composition.
I sound really harsh on myself, huh? Well, I've gotta be. I wanna be a better photographer. I may not want to be so technical like Helmi but I wanna be much better than I am right now.
So what's the solution?
Take more photos. Now where shall I go this Sunday..
